Softball: Royals hold off Yorktown

The REPORTER

Hamilton Southeastern held off a Yorktown comeback on Thursday, winning 3-2 at the Tigers’ field.

The Royals got on the board in the fourth inning when Sophia Feher hit a two-RBI single, scoring Addy Richmond and Kaleah McCarter. That gave Southeastern a 2-0 lead, and that became a 3-0 advantage in the fifth inning when McCarter singled in Richmond.

The Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and had the bases loaded, but Grace Swedarsky threw a strikeout to finish the game. Swedarsky got the pitching win, throwing nine strikeouts in five innings.

Richmond and McCarter both got two hits.

Southeastern is 16-4 and plays Saturday at Fort Wayne Carroll.

Sheridan’s comeback fell just short on Thursday, as the Blackhawks dropped a Hoosier Heartland Conference home game 8-6 to Clinton Prairie in eight innings.

The Gophers led 6-0 midway through the fifth inning before Sheridan scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ellie Eaton got the Hawks on the board with a two-run home run, also scoring Anna Rusk.

Hayleigh Kemp followed that with a double, then Amiyah Doss hit a single. Kemp was sent home by Adria Jump’s base hit, then Dallas batted in Doss. Makenzy Terry hit a sacrifice fly to bring Jump home.

Sheridan tied the game in the sixth inning; Eaton scored on Jump’s sacrifice fly. The score stayed at 6-6 until the top of the eight when Prairie singled in two runs.

Jump counted a double among her two hits, with Doss, Dallas and Terry also getting two hits.

The Blackhawks are 2-5 in the conference and 3-11 overall. Sheridan plays another conference game this afternoon at Clinton Central.
