Mrs. K and I decided to stop by the Kona Grill Happy Hour on our way out to the Westfield Playhouse to see their new show – Death of a Salesman. Our online investigations had produced a tempting HH menu at the place, which is located in the Clay Terrace Shopping Center at 14395 Clay Terrace Blvd. in Carmel.
The restaurant is quite large and well designed. The bar room is where we were seated for HH and it had a large circular bar with a row of tables on the street-side windows plus a small area near a lit fireplace. We sat just off the fireplace by a window.
Kona Grill has a generous HH schedule: for Foods – All Day Monday (!) and 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, plus Every Night from 9 p.m. to closing. That’s a lot. HH for Drinks is listed at 2 to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.
The HH menu is filled with a variety of goodies priced at $3, $6, and $9. (It famously features a Cheeseburger and Fries for $6 which we saw at a neighboring table and it looked like a good bargain.) The drinks are also priced at $3, $6, and $9. I’ve included the menu here for your perusal.

With so many interesting possibilities we decided to try something different. We ordered three items to share – Macadamia Chicken, Chicken Fried Rice, and Chicken and Shrimp Lettuce Wraps. Mrs. K added the $6 glass of Chardonnay, while I opted for just water this time.
The Macadamia Chicken was breaded with a macadamia nut coating and lightly fried (we think). The portion consisted of two medium-sized pieces plus two dabs of mashed potato and a mild sauce in a cup. It was very tasty and would have been just a snack if ordered alone. It was very well done.
The Chicken Fried Rice came as a very generous portion in a bowl and served us both a good helping. It too was flavored nicely with many chucks of chicken blended in.
The Chicken and Shrimp Lettuce Wraps consisted of a nice amount of the chopped chicken/shrimp combo and enough lettuce leaves to accommodate it. We would have preferred lettuce that was a bit firmer. But the leaves held together for the wrapping and the taste was very good. The plate also contained two portions of thinly sliced sweet pickles, and a very hot sauce in a cup which neither of us could handle well.
We chose wisely – we had plenty to eat. The total came to around $32, a bit lower than our usual – although I drank water, so that was some of the difference.
I highly recommend this place. Kona Grill is comfortable, has a lot of different things on their HH menu, and has a wonderful schedule for their HH specials.
