Baseball roundup: Golden Eagles hold off Brebeuf comeback

The Guerin Catholic baseball team won a high-scoring Circle City Conference game on Wednesday, beating Brebeuf Jesuit on the road 11-9.

Ben Canada batted in the Golden Eagles’ first run in the first inning, hitting a single to score Karson Smith. The Braves went in front with a three-run home run in the third inning, but Guerin Catholic came back with five runs in the fifth inning.

Brody Cain drew a lead-off walk, then Ian Taylor smacked a left field double. Nolan Ratcliff came up next and reached on an error, scoring Cain. Later, Canada blasted a three-run homer into right field, also bringing in Ratcliff and Smith. The Golden Eagles batted around and loaded the bases, then Cain drew a walk to score Grant Beard.

Guerin Catholic held a 6-3 lead, and it became a 9-3 lead after the sixth inning. Ratcliff got home on a wild pitch, Smith scored after Carson Kail hit a sacrifice fly, and Daulton Phillips drove in Canada with a left field hit.

Brebeuf roared back in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring six runs to tie the game at 9-9. But the Golden Eagles scored twice in the seventh to clinch the win. Canada blasted a triple into center field to send Smith and Taylor home.

Canada was 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in six runs. Smith scored four runs, while Taylor hit two doubles. Luke Gremelspacher went five innings for the win, tossing six strikeouts.

Guerin Catholic is 2-1 in conference play and 7-3 overall. The Golden Eagles travel to Norwell on Saturday to play a doubleheader with the Knights.

Carmel got a 1-0 win over Terre Haute North Wednesday in a home game at Hartman Field.

Carson Mace batted in the Greyhounds’ run in the third inning, with a left field hit to score Nate Steele.

Gabe Mathison hit a double for Carmel. Nolan Sunsdahl went six innings for the win, striking out seven and allowing just one hit.

Carmel is 6-6 and plays a doubleheader Saturday at Fort Wayne Carroll.

University dropped a 3-0 game to Brownsburg Wednesday at RoundTripper Academy.

Ryan Castetter had two hits, a double and a single, while Charlie Ranek also hit a double.

The Trailblazers are 5-6 and play this afternoon at Liberty Christian in a Pioneer Conference game.

Hamilton Heights lost a Hoosier Conference home game 5-2 to Tipton Wednesday.

The Blue Devils scored two runs in the first inning. The Huskies tied the game in the third inning: Nick Hulen scored the first run, then P.J. Wright singled in Luke Davis to even the score at 2-2. But Tipton scored twice in the sixth inning and added another run in the seventh.

Hulen hit a fourth-inning double. Dillon Pitts pitched five innings, striking out nine and allowing two hits.

The Huskies are 0-4 in conference play and 2-7 overall. Heights will host Brebeuf Jesuit on Friday.

Sheridan fell to Clinton Prairie 6-1 Wednesday in an away Hoosier Heartland Conference game.

Dayne Voege batted in the Blackhawks’ run in the first inning, hitting a single to score Braelan Bochner.

Sheridan is 0-2 in conference play and 2-6 overall. The ‘Hawks host Eastern this afternoon for another HHC game.

Hamilton Southeastern fell to Avon 14-0 in a five-inning away Hoosier Crossroads Conference game Wednesday.

Maddux Bach had two hits, a double and a single.

The Royals are 4-9 and host Avon tonight to complete the HCC series.
