On Jan. 19 at 12:30 p.m., a report of a shots fired call occurred in the Maple Run subdivision in Sheridan. The incident eventually led to the involvement of a Sheridan reserve police officer.
Sheridan Police Chief Mike Nielsen asked the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the incident. As a result of their investigation, Reserve Officer William Vernon will be charged by the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office.
Officer Vernon was placed on suspension and processed for the arrest. The charge is one count of Criminal Recklessness, I.C. 35-42-2-2(a), a Level 6 Felony.
“It is important that this investigation was handled in full transparency and without bias from the beginning,” Chief Nielsen said. “That is why I asked the Sheriff’s Office to conduct the investigation that day. The Sheridan Police Department will always follow the rule of law and treat everyone the same. This incident is unfortunate and was not intended to happen. We are all thankful that no one was injured or killed. It is a very good reminder for all of us to always be aware of your surroundings, your backstop, how far a projectile will travel, and how close you are to town or housing additions when firing any type of weapon with projectiles. My thanks go out to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office for their diligent work on this case. We will be patient as this case goes through the Hamilton County Justice System.”
