Baseball: Millers end regular season with two wins, Carmel wins two at its own invitational, Westfield shuts out Batesville, Heights splits doubleheader

The Noblesville baseball team finished the regular season with two wins in Lafayette last Saturday.

First, the Millers defeated Lafayette Jefferson 14-2 in five innings. Jacob Baker was 3-for-3 at the plate, batting in four runs and scoring two more. Trevor Corbett hit a triple and Sam Deno hit a double. Brady Bishop went 2-for-3; Bishop, Deno, Aiden Ramsey and Corbett all had two RBIs.

Nolan Decker scored three runs and Aiden Reynolds scored two. Eli Hall pitched all five innings, throwing three strikeouts.

Noblesville beat Harrison 9-3 in its second game of the day. Decker doubled in Corbett for the first run in the first inning. The Raiders scored two in the bottom of the first inning, but the Millers put up three in the top of the second and held the lead from there. Corbett sent Joe Glander home with a sacrifice fly, then Reynolds sent Blake Widget home with another sacrifice fly. Ramsey batted in Bishop to put Noblesville ahead 4-2.

Ramsey stepped up again in the fourth inning, smacking a three-run double to score Reynolds, McCoy Fulk and Decker. Noblesville added two runs in the sixth inning on bases-loaded walks: Reynolds’ walk sent Tanner Miller home, then Fulk walked to score Bishop.

Decker, Ramsey and Josh Peek all had two hits. Glander went four innings for the win, striking out three. Peek pitched the other four innings, tossing four strikeouts.

The Millers completed regular season play 22-6 and host Class 4A Sectional 8 this week at Don Dunker Field. Noblesville plays Carmel Wednesday in a first-round game.

Carmel won two games at its own Invitational last Saturday.

First, the Greyhounds beat Cathedral 4-1, scoring all four runs in the first inning. John Zangrilli got the first run on a passed ball, then Hunter Snow singled in Tyler Walkey. Jackson Harris later stepped up and smacked a two-run single, bringing home Snow and Adam Buczkowski, who had two hits in the game.

Max Winders pitched four innings for the win, striking out four.

Carmel defeated Lawrence North 2-1 in its second game. The Hounds scored both runs in the sixth inning; Snow doubled in JD Stein and Walkey.

Stein and Gabe Mathison also hit doubles, while Parker Heaney had two singles. Buczkowski pitched a complete-game win, striking out seven and allowing three hits.

Carmel is 17-10 and plays Monday at Mount Vernon to finish the regular season. The Greyhounds play Noblesville Wednesday in the first round of Sectional 8 at the Millers’ Don Dunker Field.

Westfield finished its regular season last Saturday with a 4-0 home win over Batesville.

The Shamrocks got on the board with two runs in the fourth inning. Alex Rudolph got home on an error, then Ethan Colling doubled Hoffman home. Matt Drozlek hit a fifth inning sacrifice fly to score Drew Law, then Beck Jordan batted in Rudolph with a sixth inning single.

Rudolph and Law both hit one double. Preston Tamm went three innings for the win; Nathan Bodenberg also pitched three innings, striking out four.

Westfield is 17-10 and plays Zionsville Wednesday in the first round of Sectional 8 at Noblesville.

Hamilton Heights split a doubleheader last Saturday at Frankfort.

The Huskies won the first game 8-2. The Hot Dogs scored their runs in the first inning, but Heights began its comeback with six runs in the sixth inning. Phoenix Vondersaar got the first run on a wild pitch, then Kyle Michael batted the Huskies into the lead with a two-run single, scoring Dean Mason and Nick Hulen.

Dillon Pitts scored on Logan Hickman’s RBI groundout, then Luke Davis smacked a center field double to score Kaden Lawson. Cohen Boyd singled Davis home to put Heights up 6-2.

Mason cracked a two-run home run in the seventh inning, also scoring Vondersaar, who finished the game with two hits. Hulen threw six innings for the win, striking out eight.

The Huskies dropped the second game 14-4 in five innings. Vondersaar again scored Heights’ first run of the game, this time on Adam Hughes’ sacrifice fly. Frankfort scored two runs in the bottom of the first, but Hickman tied the game in the second inning after Owen Robey reached on a dropped third strike.

The Hot Dogs scored four runs in the third inning. The Huskies got two back in the fourth: Lawson’s center field hit brought Michael home, then Mason singled Lawson in with a right field hit. But Frankfort scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth, then clinched the game with three runs in the fifth.

Hughes and Hickman both hit one double.

Heights is 14-13 and plays at Frankton Monday to finish the regular season. The Huskies travel to Brebeuf Jesuit on Saturday to play in Sectional 27, taking on Guerin Catholic in a first-round game.
