The Carmel Symphony Orchestra (CSO) will team up with magicians, strong-men acts, jugglers, and more for “Cirque Goes to the Symphony,” a Jan. 27 concert at the Palladium that will marry the captivating music of John Williams, Tchaikovsky, and others with the magic of the circus.

In this thrilling program, six members from Cirque de la Symphonie, a touring group based in Athens, Ga., will perform magic, strong-man acts, ribbon dancing, juggling, spinning shapes, cyr wheel and hula-hoop artistry while the CSO’s new music director, David Commanday, leads the orchestra through music by Bizet, de Falla, Tchaikovsky, Glinka, Strauss, Rimsky-Korsakov, Sibelius, and John Williams.
“The idea was to bring a group to Carmel that would showcase lighter symphonic repertoire and be community and family friendly, as well as provide a great date night experience,” CSO Executive Director Anne Marie Chastain said. “The Palladium is a majestic theater, and bringing this kind of act to the stage really takes advantage of the show-stopping atmosphere of the hall.”
The repertoire for “Cirque Goes to the Symphony” will feature:

- De Falla, Spanish Dance from La Vida Breve
- Offenbach, Orpheus in the Underworld Can-Can

- Rimsky-Korsakov, Dance of the Buffoons from The Snow Maiden
- Sibelius, Finlandia
- John Williams, March from Raiders of the Lost Ark
