Guerin Catholic burst out for 28 points in the second quarter, and that led the Golden Eagles (Class 3A No. 2 IFCA/No. 3 AP) to a 42-7 win Friday at Culver Academies.
Culver scored its lone touchdown late in the first quarter to give it a brief 7-0 lead. But Guerin Catholic took care of that with four straight TDs in the span of less than seven minutes. Malcolm Houze took off on a 49-yard run for GC’s first score, then Peyton Butts tied the game with an extra-point kick.
Peter Rooney moved the Golden Eagles into the lead with a 22-yard touchdown run. Guerin Catholic got the ball back immediately, then Chase Reed connected on a 60-yard pass from Ryan Zimmerman. Rooney finished the second quarter with a four-yard run, which was followed by a two-point conversion run by Cooper Navarro.
After all that, Guerin Catholic held a 28-7 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles added one touchdown in each of the next two quarters: Houze caught a 38-yard pass from Zimmerman in the third period, then Jack Linden zoomed in to the end zone on a 32-yard run. Butts made four extra point kicks.
Linden led the rushing with 166 yards, while Zimmerman totaled 133 yards on 6-of-14 throwing.
Guerin Catholic finished the regular season 7-2 and begins play in Class 3A Sectional 28 next week with a first-round game at Peru.
