Wrestling: Southeastern & Fishers end season with victories

The REPORTER

The Hamilton Southeastern boys wrestling team finished the regular season with an all-county win on Wednesday, beating Carmel 45-26.

The result was a reversal of when the two teams met in December at the Shamrock Duals, where the Greyhounds won. This time, the Royals never trailed, taking the first match when Nick Anderson won at 126 pounds by fall.

Carmel’s Caleb Mattingly tied the match at 6-6 after getting a pin at 132. But Southeastern took the lead for good when Matt Billet (at 138) and Chris Casler (at 144) won two decisions to push the Royals ahead 12-6.

Jackson Schmidt’s major decision at 150 cut HSE’s lead to 12-10. But the Royals ripped through three consecutive falls (Zach Lang at 157, Antonio Ford at 165 and Landon Hicks at 175), picked up a decision victory from De Shawn Ternoir at 190, then got a third-period pin from Evan Lawhead at 215. That made the score 39-10 and clinched the dual win for the Royals.

Carmel battled to the end, with Killian Miller getting a fall at 285, Carlo Federici winning the 106-pound match by major decision, and Tamir Halevi got a 53-second pin at 113. Tyler Jackson gave Southeastern the last word, winning by fall at 120 pounds.

The dual was the regular-season finale for both the ‘Hounds and the Royals, but they will see each other again when they compete in the Frankfort sectional on Saturday, Jan. 27.

Fishers also finished the regular season with a dual-meet victory, beating North Central 38-18 at the Tiger Den in its Senior Night meet.

The Tigers won eight of the 14 matches against the Panthers, but four of those matches were by pin. Fishers wrestlers getting falls were Mason Quarles at 113, Camden Funk at 157, Xavier Smith at 165 and Julian Burgett at 190. Aiden Lamb won by technical fall at 132.

Teyon Leonard won a 3-1 decision in overtime to claim the 138-pound match. Zeke Kramer also won a close match, taking the 144-pound bout in a 3-2 decision. Walid Oumammar won at 285 in a 1-0 decision. North Central won all six of its matches by decision, so the Tigers got 20 bonus points, making all the difference.
