Recently, six students from Westfield High School’s (WHS) The Station yearbook staff recently attended the Spring National High School Journalism Convention in Minneapolis.
The event, hosted jointly by the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association, welcomed thousands of attendees from all over the United States and abroad. It is billed as the nation’s largest gathering of scholastic journalists, advisers, and journalism teachers.
While there, students attended sessions on a wide range of media topics, got to hear from keynote speaker and music critic John Bream, and enjoyed a trade show with professional media organizations and media schools.
As a part of the experience, WHS entered two teams into the National Journalism Quiz Bowl competition, which paired broad media knowledge and speed in a trivia-style competition. Both competing teams made it into the competition’s final round.
Attendees also represented WHS individually in on-site National Media Contests against students from 66 schools from across the U.S. Five WHS journalists were recognized in the top 10 percent of competitors in their respective categories:
- Cameron Goodwin, Honorable Mention (Yearbook Copy/Captions: Clubs)
- Ava Salsman, Excellent (Feature Writing)
- Teagan Trent, Excellent (Yearbook Copy/Captions: Student Life)
- Victoria Webb, Honorable Mention (Yearbook Copy/Captions: Academics)
- Lilia Doran, Excellent (Yearbook Copy/Captions: Sports)
If you know these students, please congratulate them on their excellence, successes, and their positive representation of WHS at this national event.
