Pickleball tournament serves up good times & generous donations
The Westfield Library Foundation (WLF) raised an impressive $22,000 in support of the Westfield Washington Public Library (WWPL) at its inaugural Pickleball Tournament.
The event, held on Thursday, Aug. 17 at The Bridgewater Club, brought together pickleball enthusiasts, library supporters, and community members for a day of friendly competition and charitable giving.
“I am so happy our inaugural tournament was such a success,” WLF Executive Director Erin Downey said. “I loved watching the players have so much fun, all while raising funds for such an important piece of our community.”
Seventy-two picklers of all skill levels converged on the courts for a round-robin tournament, ensuring that both novices and experienced players had the chance to showcase their skills. All players were invited to stay for lunch where John Morrin, a three-time US Open champion in both singles and doubles and currently active on the Senior PRO tour, shared his journey to pickleball success.
“We are overwhelmed by the incredible turnout and the generosity shown by everyone who participated in the pickleball tournament,” WWPL Director Sheryl Sollars said. “The dollars raised at this event will enable the library to expand its collection of books and digital resources, support educational programs, and enhance the facilities at our new building.”
The Grand National Pickleball Center served as the event’s ACE Sponsor. Once built, the center will offer 36 indoor and 16 outdoor pickleball courts in Westfield. Other sponsors included: Ice Miller, Business Furniture, Maureen and Seth Warren, Sue Kappen Real Estate Group, Northwest Radiology, OrthoIndy, Community First Bank, Wittler Orthodontics, KRM Architecture, Medallion Partners, Meyer Najem, Copper Trace Senior Living, Baker & Taylor, and Huston Electric.
