The University boys fell to 3-3 on the season, dropping an 86-57 contest at Brebeuf Jesuit Friday night.
The Trailblazers hung close with the Braves for the first 11 minutes of the contest before Brebeuf took control in the second quarter and broke the game open in the third quarter.
Robert Russell led University with 15 points on 7 for 13 shooting. Bryce Gray had 12 points and Zien Bland 11 for the Blazers.
Brebeuf scored 10 seconds into the game and led throughout, however the Braves could not shake University in the first quarter. Bryce Gray’s second three pointer of the quarter pulled the Blazers within 10-9 with 2:26 left and Bland scored at the rim off a Gray assist to cut the lead to 12-11 with 1:03 left. Another Bland basket with two seconds remaining left Brebeuf up 16-13 after one.
After the Braves opened the second quarter scoring, University scored two straight baskets off great passes by Bland to pull within 19-17 with 5:47 left in the half. Bland found both Max McCabe and Cooper Cammack on cuts to the hoops.
Brebeuf’s Evan Haywood, a Butler signee, took over from there, scoring eight consecutive points in 32 seconds to quickly push the Brebeuf advantage to 27-17. The Braves lead eventually reached 16 before Russell scored just ahead of the buzzer to send the teams to the locker rooms with Brebeuf ahead 35-21.
Brebeuf continued to pull away in the second half, scoring 51 points after the break. The lead was as high as 33 points in the fourth quarter.
The Blazers are right back in action Saturday night, hosting Mooresville at The U Center. Junior varsity tips at 6 p.m.
