Tony-nominated comedy will be performed in Indiana for the first time

The Hyperion Players, based in eastern Hamilton County, will present Bess Wohl’s Grand Horizons, a Tony Award nominee, March 15 to 24 at Arts for Lawrence in Lawrence, Ind. This marks the first time the production has been staged in Indiana after its initial run on Broadway in 2020.

Fifty years into her marriage to Bill, Nancy wants a divorce. While her husband seems unfazed by the decision, her two adult sons are shaken to the core, forced to reexamine everything they thought they knew about their parents’ outwardly happy lives. As the family grapples with their new reality, each must reckon with their own imperfect past and how their love for each other might express itself in new and unlikely forms.

“There is so much universal truth in Grand Horizons, tucked between big, raucous laughs and audacious events,” Director Nicole Amsler said. “Every one of us knows how it feels to be confused by the rules of life and wondering where we went wrong. And as part of the sandwich generation, I have personally felt the challenges of launching your adult children into the world while simultaneously trying to manage older parent’s unique challenges.”

Grand Horizons is the third play of Hyperion’s second season, following Waiting for Godot and Doubt – A Parable. The season finale will be local playwright Brad Staggs’ I Love My Zombie, also taking place at Arts for Lawrence.

Hyperion incorporated as a nonprofit in late 2021 and publicly launched in January 2022.

Grand Horizons is scheduled for six performances:

  • Friday, March 15, 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, March 16, 7:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, March 17, 2:30 p.m.
  • Friday, March 22, 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, March 23, 7:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, March 24, 2:30 p.m.

All performances will be at Arts for Lawrence’s Theater at the Fort, 8920 Otis Ave., Indianapolis.

The show will run 2 hours, 15 minutes with a 15-minute intermission. Tickets can be purchased at hyperionplayers.com/tickets or at the door. The play contains strong language and some sensuality.
