Swimming: Carmel girls ready for No. 37

After their performance in the Friday night state swimming prelims, the Carmel Greyhounds look ready for No. 37.

Carmel qualified all 27 of its swims to today’s state finals, which take place today at the IU Natatorium. The Greyhounds sent 25 swims into the championship heat, with the other two headed to the consolation heat.

Carmel dominated the prelims, earning the top seed in 10 events and setting five new state records. The ‘Hounds began with the medley relay team of Berit Berglund, Molly Sweeney, Alex Shackell and Lucy Enoch establishing a new mark of 1 minute, 38.51 seconds. Sweeney would later set a new record in the individual medley of 1:55.88, then earn the top seed in the breaststroke.

Shackell set some records too, with a new mark in both the 50 free (22.05 seconds) and butterfly (51.16 seconds). Lynsey Bowen set the fifth new record, powering to the top seed in the 500 free with a time of 4:43.42. Bowen dropped 20 seconds from her sectional finals time. Earlier, Bowen finished first in the 200 free prelims.

Carmel’s other top seeds belong to Berglund in the backstroke (where she will be going for a fourth state title), the 200 free relay team of Erin Cummins, Madelyn Lathrop, Grace Dougherty and Meghan Christman, and the 400 free relay team of Bowen, Alexandra Ward, Christman and Vivian Wilson.

Fishers qualified 18 to today’s finals, with eight in the “A” Final and 10 more in the “B” final. The Tigers have several third seeds, including Jo Jo Ramey in the 200 and 500 freestyles, Avery Stein in the breaststroke, the medley relay team of Ramey, Stein, Kate Mouser and Emma Schwertfeger and the 400 free relay team of Addison Carlile, Nalanie Marinel Cortez, Mouser and Ramey.

Hamilton Southeastern has 10 swims in the finals, five each in the championship and the consolation heats. Audrey Crawford led the way with second seeds in the IM and the butterfly. The Royals got all three of their relays into the championship heat.

Noblesville advanced four swims to the finals. Maya McDonald qualified eighth in the breaststroke, placing her in the championship heat. Sabrina Ledwith reached the “B” final in the 500 free, as did the 200 free relay team of Caroline Santerre, McDonald, Ellie Hayward, Exley Tricker and the 400 free relay team of Haddie Vohs, Tricker, Hayward and Ledwith.

Hamilton Heights’ Teegan Madara finished 12th in the 500 free and will swim in the consolation heat.

The state finals begin today with diving prelims and semi-finals at 9 a.m., followed by the swimming and diving finals at 1 p.m.

 

Positions 1-8 qualify for championship heat (“A” Final), positions 9-16 qualify for consolation heat (“B” Final), positions 17 and 18 are alternates.
