Sheridan Community Schools debuts new childcare program

Submitted by Sheridan Community Schools

Sheridan Community Schools (SCS) has begun its new FLIGHT program, which stands for Fun, Learning, Inspiring, Growth, Helping, Together.

It’s an exciting new before- and after-school initiative designed to provide all students with a safe, structured, and academically inclined environment that will push forth the academic growth and connections that SCS strives for with all students. FLIGHT is replacing the former BHC (Blackhawk Care) program and will be offered at no cost to families thanks to a generous grant secured for the 2025-26 school year.

SCS has been working to create a FLIGHT program for quite some time and it is rooted in the academic support, social-emotional learning, and increased involvement in schoolwide extracurriculars. The program emphasizes communication with families and has a main goal of offering consistent structure for students, so they can thrive.

The Sheridan Elementary School FLIGHT program will launch on the first day of school, Aug. 6 and will operate every school day from 2:45 to 5:45 p.m. Before-school care will also be offered, but it will focus more on supervision and providing students with a calm start to their day.

Currently, SES has 54 students registered, and those who had previously requested childcare have been contacted. Registration is required and is available at tinyurl.com/SheridanFLIGHTsignup.

At the elementary level, the program is designed to help build confidence and exploration. After the allotted academic and tutoring portion of each afternoon, students will have the opportunity to explore various clubs and/or activities, such as Cartoon Club and Wilderness Club.

At Sheridan Middle and High School, FLIGHT will be rolled out soon after the start of school, with specific dates to be determined. Once up and running, the program will run every school day. Specifically, it will run from 3 to 5:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 3 to 5 p.m. Fridays.

At these upper levels, there will be more focus on academic support, but they will still have similar opportunities to join and participate in various extracurricular activities. At all levels of the FLIGHT program, students and families will have the option to participate in ONLY the academic portion, or the entire experience.

More information will be available at the Back to School Night from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4 at the Sheridan High School Track. You can also contact John Marquis at jmarquis@sheridan.k12.in.us.

This new and extraordinary FLIGHT program is ready to fly, so don’t miss the opportunity to give your student the chance to soar.
