The City of Westfield’s Parks and Recreation Department will hold Wind and Wonder Day, a new community event celebrating creativity, outdoor play, and all things powered by the wind. The program will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8 at Freedom Trail Park (Field No. 3), located at 500 Deer Walk Trace.
Wind and Wonder Day will be a breezy afternoon of creativity and fun, featuring multiple activity stations inspired by the whimsical theme of wind. Attendees are encouraged to explore at their own pace, enjoy the outdoors, and engage in hands-on experiences for children and families.
Participants will have the chance to:
- Decorate and fly colorful kites
- Create colorful pinwheels
- Build simple windchimes with beads, strings, bells, and craft materials
- Fly paper airplanes
- Play with bubbles and giant bubble wands
Kite-making materials will be provided, but participants may also bring their own kites.
“Wind and Wonder Day is a great example of the creativity our Parks and Recreation team brings to Westfield,” Mayor Scott Willis said. “I am especially proud that this new program was developed by one of our interns, giving her the opportunity to turn an idea into a meaningful experience for our community. I encourage families to come out, enjoy the park, and make memories together.”
The program planning and development of Wind and Wonder Day has been led by Recreation Programming Intern, Adria Van Ostrand, as part of the Parks and Recreation Internship Program. Designed to provide college students with meaningful, hands-on experience in a professional setting, the internship offers real opportunities to learn, create, and contribute directly to community programming.
“I have enjoyed the opportunities this internship has given me to give back to the community,” Van Ostrand said. “It will be incredibly rewarding to see all the effort that I put into this project pay off. I hope Wind and Wonder Day becomes a Westfield tradition that families look forward to.”
