Softball: Royals get comeback win over ‘Rocks

Hamilton Southeastern came roaring back from a big deficit on Tuesday, scoring eight runs in the sixth inning to beat Westfield 11-8 in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game at the Royals’ field.
Southeastern scored the game’s first run in the second inning when Jolie Johnson batted in Maddie Bucher. The Shamrocks took over after that, scoring four runs in the third inning.
Mya Hughes got Westfield on the board when she scored after Avery Parker was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Natalie Deck then blasted a double to score Maggie Roh, Reghan Oland and Parker.
The Shamrocks added two more runs in each of the next two innings. In the fourth inning, Brooklyn Carey’s sacrifice fly sent Hughes home, then Deck singled in Roh. In the fifth inning, Roh singled home Cara Snedeker, then was batted in by Ohland.
That put Westfield ahead 8-1. The Royals began their comeback in the bottom of the fifth when Taylor Larson led off with a home run. Olivia Howard then doubled Ava Aguilar home, cutting the lead to 8-3.
Southeastern then got going in the sixth inning. Larson singled Alli Boyle and Daphne Bush in with a left field hit. Johnson and Larson both scored on separate wild pitched. Howard tied the game with an RBI double to score Reece Massey, then Chase singled Aguilar home, putting HSE ahead 9-8. Ella Lewis batted in Howard for the 10th run, and Chase scored on Johnson’s RBI fielder’s choice to complete the scoring.
Howard finished the game 3-for-4, while Larson totaled three RBIs. Chase pitched the final four innings, striking out four.
Oland and Deck each had three this for Westfield.
In a Monday game, Southeastern beat Anderson 10-0 in five innings. Alli Boyle hit a home run, while Jolie Johnson was 2-for-3, including a triple, and batted in four runs. Jenna Chase also drove in four runs.
Isabella Butts pitched four innings for the win, striking out five.
The Royals are 7-12 and play this evening at Richmond. Westfield is 7-14 and plays today at Hamilton Heights.

Carmel also won a high-scoring all-county game on Monday, beating Fishers 16-6 in five innings at Cherry Tree Softball Complex.
The Tigers led 3-0 after two innings, but the Greyhounds took over with six runs in the third and fourth innings, then finished the game with four runs in the fifth. Megan Nichols was 4-for-4 at the plate, including three doubles, and totaled five RBIs.
Sophie Esposito was 3-for-4, and Caroline Roop hit two doubles. Both drove in three runs. Audrey Hussain hit a home run. Paxton Law pitched all five innings for the win.
Olivia Latimer, Hannah Mays and Karyn Trice all had three hits for the Tigers.
On Tuesday, Carmel dropped a 6-2 Metropolitan Conference game to Center Grove. The ‘Hounds scored their runs in the third inning when Kylie Cunningham hit a two-run home run. Cunningham went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Fishers dropped a 9-0 HCC game to Franklin Central on Tuesday. Mays pitched five and one-third inning, striking out five.
Carmel is 11-9 and hosts Terre Haute North on Friday. The Tigers are 9-7 and host New Palestine this afternoon.

Guerin Catholic, now up to No. 2 in the Class 3A softball poll, beat Hamilton Heights 5-1 Tuesday at the Huskies’ field.
The Golden Eagles scored their first run in the first inning when Ana Macha got home on an error. Guerin Catholic added three runs in the third; Aliyah Dorsey singled in Macha, then Izzy Kemp hit a home run, also sending Dorsey home.
Dorsey led off the seventh inning with a home run. Alicia Flores pitched a complete game, tossing 17 strikeouts.
The Huskies scored their run in the seventh inning; Kelsie Albright singled in Hayley Greene. Lily Roush pitched a complete game, striking out 10.
The Golden Eagles are 15-1 and play at Sheridan this afternoon. The Huskies are 3-10 and host Westfield this afternoon.

Noblesville picked up two big wins to start the week.
The Millers knocked off 3A No. 1 Yorktown 12-4 on Monday. Ella White, Cameron Grayson and Abby Harvey all hit home runs, with Harvey, Reis Sjoholm and Lauren DeRolf each getting three this. Gabby Fowler had two hits, a triple and a double. Grayson pitched six innings for the win.
Noblesville took care of Brownsburg 13-2 in a five-inning HCC game on Tuesday. Harvey blasted two homers, giving her a total of five RBIs for the game. White and Taylor Thompson also hit home runs, with White going 3-for-4 and driving in three runs. Grayson pitched all five innings for another win.
The Millers are 11-4 and play Thursday at Tipton.
