Softball Roundup: Southeastern, Fishers, Carmel play in weekend tournaments

The Hamilton Southeastern softball team went 3-1 this past weekend at the Terre Haute South Lady Braves Bash.

The Royals began the tournament last Friday with a 5-3 win over Beech Grove in eight innings. The game was tied 2-2 after the regulation seventh inning, but Southeastern put up three runs in the eighth to win. Lani Wyrick and Alex Kiemeyer both counted a double among their two hits. Grace Swedarsky pitched all eight innings, throwing 17 strikeouts.

The Royals played three games last Saturday, starting with a 2-1 win over Edgewood. Southeastern scored both of its runs in the second inning; a double from Megan Wincek brought both Reese Garland and Keira Lodes home. Jenna Chase got the pitching win, going four innings and allowing just two hits.

The host Braves handed HSE its lone loss of the tournament in the Royals’ next game, by the score of 8-5 in eight innings. The game was tied at 5-5 after seven innings before Terre Haute South scored three runs in the top of the eighth.

Wyrick, Addy Justice and Chase all had two hits. Chase, Kiemeyer, Sayla Stock and Makenna Selm all hit one double.

Southeastern rebounded to beat Sullivan 1-0 to finish tournament play. The Royals got their run in the third inning: Emmy Seifferlein scored after Lodes reached on error.

Selm hit a double and Wyrick hit a single for Southeastern. Swedarsky only allowed hit during the complete game, striking out 12.

Southeastern is 6-1 for the season and plays on the road for all of its games next week. The Royals play at Zionsville Wednesday, New Palestine Thursday, Mount Vernon Friday and Harrison Saturday, where they will also take on Crown Point.

Fishers played four games at the Castle Invitational last week.

The Tigers started last Friday with a 17-4 loss in five innings to Penn. Fishers was held to three hits, one each for Hailey Trueblood, Taylor Duplessis and Liv McNall.

In their first game last Saturday, the Tigers bounced back to beat Tecumseh 14-7. Fishers got going in the third inning with five runs, including a three-run home run from Duplessis. Brooke Johnson hit a triple in the sixth inning; she and Brooke Clayton later scored off a Kate Murray double.

Jenna Grubb and Johnson both went 4-for-5 at the plate, with Kendall Jordan and Murray both hitting 3-for-5; Murray had three RBIs. Murray pitched a complete game, striking out seven.

The Tigers fell to Mooresville 12-9 in their second game. The Pioneers led 12-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Fishers never gave up, putting up eight runs in that inning. That included Victoria Abel cracking a three-run triple for the second of her two hits.

Hannah Kinder had two hits while Duplessis had one double.

The Tigers finished the tournament with a 12-1 win over Bedford North Lawrence in six innings. Fishers led 9-1 in the sixth inning before Murray finished the game with a three-run homer, also scoring McNall and Azstryd Alexander.

Johnson, Duplessis and Alexander all hit a double. Johnson finished 3-for-4 at the plate and Murray totaled four RBIs. She also threw eight strikeouts in a complete game.

The Tigers are 4-3 and host Noblesville Tuesday in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game. Fishers then hosts Indianapolis Lutheran and Whiteland on Saturday.

Carmel also played at the Castle Invitational last weekend.

The Greyhounds began last Friday with a 9-6 loss to Brownsburg. Carmel had six hits in the game, but five of them were extra-base hits. Ava Longstreth cracked a triple and a double, Jayden Kleiner hit a triple, while Mia Fleming and Paxton Law both hit one double.

Longstreth had three hits total for the ‘Hounds; she and Ellie Goddard both scored two runs, while Kleiner drove in two runs.

Carmel played Castle in its first game last Saturday, falling 17-12. The Greyhounds trailed 15-5 in the middle of the sixth inning before putting up seven runs.

Law counted a triple among her three hits, while Kleiner had two doubles and a single. Fleming and Law both drove in three runs, and Grace Sharp had three hits and two RBIs.

Carmel fell to Pike Central 6-4 in its second game of the day. The ‘Hounds led 4-0 after four and a half innings, but Pike Central took control with five runs in the fifth.

Longstreth had two hits, while Fleming hit a double.

The Greyhounds won their final game of the tournament, beating Floyd Central 8-6.

Carmel scored three runs in the second inning, starting with Kathryn Merryman getting home on a wild pitch. Sharp then tripled in Law and Katherine Warren. Kleiner and Law both hit a double and Fleming also batted in two runs.

Emily Smith got the pitching win, striking out five over four innings.

The Greyhounds are 2-6 for the season. Carmel plays away games at Lawrence North on Tuesday and Noblesville on Wednesday, hosts New Palestine on Friday then welcomes Columbus North for a Saturday doubleheader.
