Softball: ‘Hounds begin week with big victories

The Carmel softball team began the week with a pair of big wins.
On Monday, the Greyhounds cruised past Bishop Chatard 7-0 in an away game. Carmel scored a run in the first inning when Sophie Esposito singled in Megan Nichols. In the second inning, Lily Sullivan doubled Audrey Hussain home, then Ella Ohrvall hit a double to score Sullivan.
The ‘Hounds pulled away further in the seventh inning. Nichols blasted a three-run home run, also scoring Ohrvall and Kylie Cunningham. Hussain later cracked a solo homer into center field.
Ohrvall, Nichols, Hussain and Sullivan each had two hits. Paxton Law pitched a complete game for the win.
On Tuesday, Carmel beat Pike 13-2 in a five-inning Metropolitan Conference game. The Greyhounds led 6-0 after the first inning and added three more runs in the second. Sullivan led off that inning with a home run.
Esposito went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs, while Ella Greenawald batted in three runs. Maddie Stacy got the pitching win, allowing only one hit in three innings.
Carmel is 10-7 and plays Pendleton Heights this afternoon.

Westfield split a pair of games to begin the week.
The Shamrocks beat Lawrence North 10-5 on Monday. Westfield started with three runs in the first inning; Avery Parker, Brooklyn Carey all scored after errors. In the third inning, Parker smacked a home run, also scoring Roh.
The ‘Rocks added three more runs in the fifth inning. Reghan Oland got home after Natalie Deck was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Victoria Pucci then doubled in Parker and Carey. Westfield finished the scoring with two runs in the sixth inning; Cara Snedeker got home on Parker’s RBI groundout and Oland scored on Carey’s sacrifice fly.
Oland and Roh both finished with two hits. Lilah Denton pitched three innings for the win.
On Tuesday, the Shamrocks dropped a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game to Zionsville 15-9. It was back and forth for most of the game, with Westfield taking a 7-6 lead after five innings by scoring three times in the bottom of the fifth.
Pucci scored after Carey reached on error, Parker scored on another error and Zoe Klink batted in Carey. But the Eagles took control in the sixth inning by scoring nine runs.
Parker was 2-for-2 at the plate, while Snedeker hit a double. Parker and Carey both scored three runs.
The Shamrocks are 7-9 and host Mount Vernon Friday.

Hamilton Heights dropped a pair of games early this week.
On Monday, the Huskies fell to Northwestern 13-2 in a five-inning Hoosier Conference game. Hayley Greene batted in Isabella Neiling for a first-inning run. In the third inning, Greene stole home plate.
Greene finished the game with two hits, including a double.
Heights fell to Lewis Cass 9-7 on Tuesday in a tough, eight-inning conference game. The Kings went up 4-0 in the top of the third inning, but the Huskies tied the game in the fourth inning.
Greene led off the inning with a single, the first of four consecutive hit singles. Sydney Massicotte’s center field hit got her on base. Greene later scored by stealing home plate.
Ashlyn Fletcher singled on to base, then Lily Roush batted in Massicotte. Kaylee Rhoton was up next, and her triple got Fletcher and Roush home.
Cass scored a run in the top of the fifth, but Heights jumped ahead in the bottom of the inning with three runs. Fletcher doubled in Greene and Massicotte, then Rhoton batted Fletcher in. With that, the Huskies led 7-5. But the Kings tied the game in the seventh inning, then scored twice in the eighth.
Roush was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Rhoton totaled three RBIs. Roush also pitched a complete game, tossing 15 strikeouts.
Heights is 1-9 and hosts Shelbyville on Thursday.

Sheridan fell to Eastern 20-7 Tuesday in a six-inning Hoosier Heartland Conference game.
The Blackhawks scored their first run in the bottom of the second inning, with Kendra Blankenship batting in Emma Settles. Addyson Ream then hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, also scoring Taylor Bates.
Sheridan added four more runs in the fifth inning. Jacquellynne Bates got home on a wild pitch, then Ream cracked her second homer of the game, also sending Riley Reed and Taylor Bates home. Caitlin Neese also hit a double in the inning.
Ream was 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in five runs total. Taylor Bates hit a double as well.
The Blackhawks are 2-4 and host Clinton Prairie Friday in another HHC game.
