Sleep with your door closed

Fishers firefighters on Monday launched the “Sleep with your door closed” campaign at Launch Fishers, 12175 Visionary Way.

Fire and resulting smoke can be slowed by a closed door, as seen here on each side of this sample door. One side (left) is badly burnt, but the other side (right) was left largely intact. This could allow someone inside a building extra time to get out. (Photos provided)

The door display will remain at Launch Fishers until the end of the week as it begins its journey to businesses, schools, churches and events.

This standalone display shows the effectiveness of keeping doors closed in your home and business to slow or stop the travel of smoke and fire in the event of a fire. Click here to view a video from Underwriters Laboratory showing the differences between an open and a closed door.

In today’s world of construction and furnishings, you have about three minutes to exit a home after the smoke alarm goes off. A closed door can give you more time to escape. It is important to do for everyone, but especially children, the elderly and the confined. It’s a simple step that can save your life.

Here are other fire safety tips:

  • Sleep with your door closed.
  • Know two ways out.
  • Check smoke alarm batteries monthly and replace alarms every 10 years.
  • Teach kids how to open windows.
  • Have a meeting place outside away from the building.
  • Inspect your home for safety.
