Worldwide, two pillar themes for Rotarians revolve around youth and education, and what better way to combine those pillars than to hold an annual speech contest for local youth?

This year, as it has for multiple years past, the Sheridan club reached out to Sheridan High School’s speech teacher Mrs. Becky Pitzer for assistance.

Pitzer came up with two interested students to participate in the contest. Unfortunately, one of the students dropped out at the last moment due to illness, but the contest still went on as scheduled.

Sheridan High School senior Nolan Miller, proudly accompanied by his parents and Mrs. Pitzer as well as new Superintendent Mary Robeson, came to last Tuesday’s meeting and gave his seven-minute speech. He walked away with first-place honors and is $100 richer for his efforts. Miller is now eligible to move on to Rotary District 6560 competition against winners from other regional clubs and a chance to win $1,000.
