Westfield got back on the winning track Friday, taking care of Avon 38-14 in an away Hoosier Crossroads Conference game.
The Class 6A No. 7 Shamrocks scored late in the first quarter. Jackson Gilbert sent a 67-yard pass to Beau Braun to set up Westfield in the red zone, and Kendall Garnett punched it in to get the ‘Rocks on the board.
The Orioles tied the game in the second quarter, but Westfield answered with a score with 1:12 left in the half, when Gilbert and Maximus Nosler teamed up for another passing touchdown. Brody Boehm made the extra-point kicks after both scores, and the Shamrocks led 14-7 at halftime.
The ‘Rocks added two more touchdowns in the third quarter. Gilbert threw his third touchdown pass of the game, this one to Gabe Aramboles with 10:09 left in the period. Later, Mikeah Webster punched it in to put Westfield ahead 28-7. Boehm again made both extra-point kicks.
Avon scored to open the fourth quarter, but that would be as close as the Orioles would get. Boehm added a field goal midway through the fourth quarter, then Garnett ran in a touchdown to complete the Westfield scoring.
Gilbert finished 14-of-22 for 241 yards, with Braun making four catches for 102 yards. Webster led the defense with 12 tackles, followed by Drew Law with 10 stops. Coleton Vondersaar made two tackles for a loss.
The Shamrocks are 4-1 in the HCC and 6-1 overall, and hosts Fishers next week.
