Ben Davis has big second half to take down Carmel

The REPORTER

The Carmel Greyhounds were upset-minded heading to the lower west side for a showdown with their former Metropolitan Conference rivals, the Ben Davis Giants. The ‘Hounds had won the previous three regular season meetings. But, that came to a screeching halt on Friday. The host Giants used a big second half to pull away in defeating Carmel, 45-16.

The Giants didn’t put the first points on the board until the final minute of the first on a rushing touchdown by Alijah Price. Defense was the name of the game for both squad for the majority of the first half.

Ben Davis kicker Ben Rudolph made a 40-yard field goal in the final seconds of the first half for a 10-0 lead at half for the Giants.

A couple third-quarter scores from BD from a 64-yard reception by Mark Zachery, along with an interception of an Anthony Coellner pass that was run back and they were up 24-0 just four minutes into the quarter.

Carmel was finally able to get things going in their direction. Norvil Tucker ran 52 yards for a touchdown to make it 24-7.

Kicker Josh Placzek connected on a 30-yard field goal at the beginning of the fourth for two unanswered scores, but that wouldn’t last long.

After that, it was all Ben Davis. Two touchdown passes from Thomas Gotkowski and another from Isaiah Rogers and the Giants were up 45-7.

The Greyhounds scored in the final seconds of the game when Nate Rogers caught a TD pass from Zach Trent to account for the final score of 45-16.

Norvil Tucker had 10 carries for 99 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Ozzy Pollard had three catches for 52 yards.

Carmel (4-3) plays at home next week against Warren Central (3-4).
