On Tuesday, Senator Jim Banks (R-Ind.) sent a letter to the CEO of Discord, Mr. Humam Sakhnini, regarding Discord’s recent connections to violent acts in the United States. The recent revelation that Charlie Kirk’s shooter used Discord to discuss the assassination is the latest example.
In part, the letter reads:
“Unfortunately, Charlie Kirk’s murder is not Discord’s first connection to extremism. In 2024, The Washington Post reported that the cybercriminal gang 764 “thrives on Discord” and used the platform to groom children. 764 encourages children to engage in self-harm and to create and send sexual content. Videos and police records document the use of Discord to carry out this abuse. One Oklahoma mother told the Post she holds Discord responsible for her daughter’s abuse. A school shooter in Georgia last year – Colin Gray – went to Discord to declare that he would commit a mass shooting. At least one other school shooter discussed school shootings on Discord and described “gearing up” moments before attacking a school in Iowa.”
