Royals win opener over Hounds

The Hamilton Southeastern girls soccer team won an all-Hamilton County clash at Carmel’s Murray Stadium Saturday, Aug. 16.

The Class 3A No. 1-ranked Royals beat the No. 3 Greyhounds 3-1 in the season opener for both teams. Sophomore Rebekah Tekrony scored Southeastern’s first goal, with senior Riley Boyd making the assist, putting the Royals up 1-0 at halftime.

Another HSE sophomore, Margaux Henning, scored to give the Royals a 2-0 lead; senior Sloane May made the assist. Carmel answered back when senior Adalyn Cameron scored in the 43rd minute, junior Olivia Ade had the assist. But Boyd scored with three seconds left, with May again on the assist.

The Royals are back in action tonight, hosting Franklin Central in their first Hoosier Crossroads Conference game of the season. The Greyhounds’ next game is Friday when they host 2A No. 7 Guerin Catholic.

Westfield also got an all-county win Saturday to start its season, beating Guerin Catholic 4-0.

Lola Horstman scored the 3A No. 13 Shamrocks’ first goal in the second minute. Westfield put in its second goal midway through the first half when Ary Ali sent a corner kick to Arri Cooke-Dennis, who headed it in.

The Rocks led 2-0 at halftime and added two more goals in the second half. Ali cashed in on another corner kick, sending it to Avery Van Den Berg for another header goal. Graysen Wheeler scored the fourth goal, off a double assist by Kylie Ipsen and Brynn Sargent.

Goalkeepers Emma Deitsch and Leah Hunsucker combined for the shutout.

Both teams are back in action tonight. Westfield hosts 3A No. 17 Fishers in the first HCC contest for both teams, while Guerin Catholic travels to 3A No. 14 Zionsville.

Sheridan picked up a season-opening win over Lebanon Monday, by the score of 1-0.

After a scoreless halftime, the 1A No. 14 Blackhawks broke through when Abby Dallas found Avery Hills, who kicked the ball in. Meanwhile, Norah Stites tracked down a goal that was inches from scoring, while Molly Pottorff made several defensive plays as well. Makenzie Terry made nine saves for the shutout.

“We had nerves early and didn’t have our best energy, but the girls stuck together and stepped up when it mattered most,” said Sheridan coach Brian Prange.

The Blackhawks play at Northwestern tonight.

Fishers opened its season Saturday with a 4-0 win over McCutcheon.

Senior Elise May scored two goals for the Tigers, with junior Jena Love and senior Mallory Long both scoring one goal. Senior Georgia Scott dished out two assists, followed by one each for May and senior Rena Sawada.

Fishers tied with 2A No. 18 Park Tudor 1-1 Monday. Senior Mya Williams scored the Tigers’ goal, with senior Lexi March making the assist. Fishers is 1-0-1 for the season.

Noblesville, ranked No. 2 in 3A, fell to 3A No. 7 Cathedral 2-0 in a game Saturday at Grand Park.

The Millers play their first home game of the season tonight, welcoming Pendleton Heights.

Hamilton Heights dropped a 6-0 game to 1A No. 1 Heritage Christian on Tuesday.

The 2A No. 16 Huskies host Pike on Thursday.

University fell to Covenant Christian 6-0 on Tuesday.

The Trailblazers host the Indianapolis HomeSchool Wildcats on Thursday.
