Westfield finished its regular season with a victory on Wednesday, beating a tough Lewis Cass team 52-43 at CSI Gymnasium.
The Shamrocks and the Kings were tied at 12-12 after one quarter. Cam Haffner scored eight points for Westfield, while Alex Romack added four. The ‘Rocks began to get some separation in the second quarter, using a 10-0 run to take a 24-14 lead late in the period. Romack added another four points, and Jonah Spinner helped out with a pair of layins for four points.
Cass finished the half with back-to-back baskets to cut the Shamrocks’ lead to 24-18 by halftime, then opened the third with a jumper to make it a four-point game. Westfield answered with another 10-0 spurt; Haffner scored the first four points, then Romack added six more.
“I thought our passion and energy needed to be a lot better in the second half than it was in the first half,” said Shamrocks coach Shane Sumpter. Fortunately, that changed in the second half, with Westfield increasing its energy and enthusiasm.
“I thought that picked up a little bit and we were able to grind away and get a lead and hold on,” said Sumpter.
Romack had a fantastic third quarter, scoring 12 points. The ‘Rocks led 43-25 after three periods. Cass slowly chipped away at Westfield’s lead in the fourth, but the Shamrocks held them off. Trey Buchanan helped out with a 3-pointer during the first part of the period.
Romack scored 22 points, while Haffner finished the game with 12 points.
Westfield is 18-6 and will now head to Class 4A Sectional 8 play at Noblesville. The Shamrocks are focused on Fishers, which beat Westfield 73-48 on Feb. 12.
