Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.-05) announced on Thursday her appointment by Speaker Kevin McCarthy to serve as Commissioner to the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the U.S. Helsinki Commission.
The Helsinki Commission is an independent commission of the federal government established in 1976 by Congress and the world’s largest regional security organization that promotes human rights, military security, and economic cooperation in 57 countries in Europe, Eurasia, and North America. It is responsible for overseeing U.S. engagement with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and consists of 21 commissioners. Nine commissioners are members of the Senate, nine are members of the House of Representatives (five from the majority and four from the minority in each chamber), and three are executive branch officials.
“I am honored to be appointed to this important bipartisan body in these challenging times for global security,” Rep. Spartz said. “I look forward to bringing my personal and professional experiences to the table to restore peace on the European continent once again.”
