Rebecca E. Smith, 56, stationed at Sasebo Naval Base, Sasebo, Japan, passed away on June 18, 2017.
Rebecca was a passionate and highly respected educator with an emphasis in both Music and Elementary Education. Her teaching career took her across the Southern and South Western United States, before heading to the Far East. While in the United States, Rebecca taught in Petal, Miss.; Pensacola, Fla.; Salt Lake City, Utah; Glendale, Ariz.; and San Antonio, Texas. As part of the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), Rebecca taught at Osan Air Base in Korea, as well as her current assignment at Sasebo Naval Base in Sasebo, Nagasaki, Japan. She had been stationed at Sasebo Naval Base from August 2004 until June 2017, teaching at J.N. Darby Elementary School.
Rebecca is survived by her loving husband, Doug Smith of Kaiserslautern, Germany; two sons, William J. Smith of RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom and Ryan C. Lucio of Bradenton, Florida; and two brothers, James McCaleb of Ashburn, Va., and Jonathan McCaleb of San Antonio, Texas.
Rebecca’s family will celebrate her life at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church, 207 E. 2nd St., Sheridan, with visitation from 4 p.m. until the time of service. Pastor Byron Fritz will be officiating. Rebecca will be laid to rest at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17, 2018, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
