On Wednesday, May 13, the Husky 4-H’ers began our meeting with the pledges and then got down to business.
Lauren Happel filled three roles by serving as President and then giving both the Treasurer’s and Secretary’s reports. Zuri Ebigbo shared a Devotion about courage, and Sophia Camperelli gave a Health and Safety demonstration about fire safety, including what to keep away from a fire and how far back to stand.
We then voted on several items, including whether to donate money to the Food and Animal Auction, and the motion passed. We also voted on whether to donate money for photos at the 4-H Fair, and the vote also passed.
Our trivia question for the night was, “When was Health added to the 4 H’s?” The correct answer was 1911 (wow!), and McKinsey Allen won that.
Next, Chiamaka Ebigbo demonstrated how to hold a rabbit properly. She taught us how to cover its eyes so it wouldn’t be scared and why you hold rabbits a certain way. We also got to pet the rabbit, whose name was Axel.
This month our guest speaker was Mrs. Fouch, one of our club leaders. She talked to us about chickens (along with bringing a real chicken). She taught us some interesting facts about her chicken, such as where her chicken originated from and what class it was in. Then she shared a really cool fact: the older a chicken gets, the whiter its legs get!
After we got to pet Mrs. Fouch’s Buff Orpington chicken, Goldie, Natalie Knapp gave a demonstration on horse saddles, such as the parts of a saddle and why some saddles look the way they look. She also taught us how to get on and off a horse.
After that, Chiamaka Ebigbo and Natalie Knapp led us in two games. The first was Hula-Hoop Toss, where teams must hold hands and work together to pass a hula hoop from one end to the other. But the catch: you can’t use your hands! After a round of that, Chiamaka and Natalie taught us how to play Hula-Hoop Beanbag Toss, where players must toss a beanbag into a hula hoop to advance their hoop till they reach the end.
After a couple of heated, exciting rounds, we ended the meeting with snacks. But while some members were ending things, this reporter was starting some. Now, what you are about to read is the product of what this reporter did with some of his spare time.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you: The Dirt!
Our question for this meeting was “What has been your favorite part of the meeting so far this year?” Here are the responses from a few of our Husky 4-Hers:
“Learning about what the guest speakers are talking about.” – Nathaniel Leonard
“The ice cream sundae at the beginning.” – Eliza Allen
“Petting the bunny.” – Eleanor Brown
