Phyllis Virginia Bruce, 94, Westfield, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 19, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 3, 1931, in McLean, Ill., to Carl and Jennie (Foley) Onstott.
Phyllis grew up with a strong sense of purpose and a deep appreciation for learning. After graduating from LeRoy High School, she continued her education at Illinois State University in Normal, Ill., where she studied for two years. Her early professional life reflected her dedication to service and community – she worked as a Bank Teller and later as a Courthouse Clerk in McLean County. She also spent time as a Teacher’s Aide, sharing her patience and warmth with young students. Eventually, Phyllis became a partner alongside her husband, Robert, in their family business, the Bruce Memorial Home, where her compassion and steady presence touched many lives.
Faith and fellowship were central to Phyllis’s life. She was a devoted member of the LeRoy Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Deacon and participated in Presbyterian Women’s Ministries. She cherished her time in Ladies Bridge groups and Bible studies, forming lifelong friendships rooted in shared faith and community.
Phyllis embraced life with curiosity and enthusiasm. A passionate world traveler, she explored Israel on two occasions, Germany, Alaska, Arizona, and even traveled to Antarctica. She enjoyed the challenge and camaraderie of bridge, the creativity of knitting and crocheting, and the satisfaction of refinishing furniture. A loyal Chicago Cubs fan, she celebrated every season with hope and heart. Her flower and vegetable gardens were a source of joy, beauty, and pride – reflecting her nurturing spirit.
Phyllis will be remembered for her kindness, her steadfast faith, her adventurous heart, and the love she poured into her family and community. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched.
In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her loving husband of 40 years, Robert Bruce; daughter, Kristine Bruce Lykkebak; two brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include her daughter, Kathleen (Bill) Bruce Farrar; son Timothy (Justine) Bruce; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Family and friends will gather for the Celebration of Life Service on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at LeRoy Presbyterian Church, 101 E. Pine St., LeRoy, Ill. The family requests in honor of Phyllis, attendees please wear Chicago Cubs or sports team gear.
A Committal Service will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, LeRoy, Ill.
