The City of Noblesville has completed the intersection transition of Field Drive and Cumberland Road from a four-way stop to a roundabout.
“Traffic flow at the roundabout has significantly improved at the intersection since it is now free flowing instead of signs requiring all lanes to come to a complete stop,” Assistant City Engineer Jim Hellmann said. “The configuration change and the addition of lights around the roundabout increases safety for all road users.”
The intersection was analyzed by the Noblesville Engineering Department due to concerns with vehicle delays and safety. In order to create a safer and more efficient intersection, a roundabout was chosen. Construction on the roundabout was coordinated around Noblesville School’s summer break to minimize the impact to the high school.
United Construction Services constructed the roundabout. The project, which cost $977,000, was funded through a federal grant with INDOT. The City of Noblesville’s match of 20 percent was $195,400.
While the road surface work has been completed, Noblesville Schools and Nickel Plate Arts are working to create a community art sculpture honoring Noblesville Schools at the center of the roundabout. The roundabout area is a centralized point for school traffic for three of the district’s 10 schools – Noblesville High School, East Middle School and White River Elementary – as well as various Noblesville Schools’ athletic facilities.
A public design contest for art was held earlier this year and work to engage the community in finalizing a plan for the space is still ongoing.
