The Carmel Greyhounds took no time at all to grab their second win of the young season. They made easy work on Friday night at the Eric Clark Activity Center with a rout of the Lawrence Central Bears, 62-34.
The Class 4A No. 8 ‘Hounds stormed out in the first with a lead of 18-6 and never looked back. The second quarter would mirror about the same output at 16-8 for a convincing halftime lead of 34-14.
Carmel kept up its consistency by outscoring the Bears in the second 28-20 to fully push away its former MIC foes for a dominating 62-34 win.
Senior Sam Orme led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting, including making all three of his attempts outside the arc. Orme also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Senior Jared Bonds and Alex Couto each added 10 points while combining for seven for seven shooting. Logan Reinhart also chipped in nine, knocking down all three of his shots from three-point range.
Consistency proved a lot for the Greyhounds on Friday, as they shot extremely well from the floor at 67 percent, making 25 of their 37 field goal attempts.
Carmel (2-1) will finish its weekend on the road at Plainfield (3-0) on Saturday night. The Quakers edged out Whiteland on the road Friday, 53-50.
Huskies edged out in overtime at New Castle
The New Castle Trojans appeared to fully be in the mode to defend their home court. It took everything that the Hamilton Heights Huskies had, but the host Trojans held off the Huskies in overtime, 54-53.
The Trojans started off the game on fire, leading 22-11 through one, but that didn’t seem to bother Heights.
Hamilton Heights came back to take the second 15-9 to trail just 31-26 at halftime.
The Huskies had an even better third period with a 21-11 score to take a 47-42 lead.
New Castle kept the scoring low in the fourth and put forth a solid defensive effort in limiting the Huskies to just two points for a 7-2 quarter. This sent it to overtime where the Trojans would outlast Heights 5-4 for a 54-53 win over the Huskies.
Junior Tillman Etchison led the Huskies with 18, while Maddox Bohland had 14 points and Evan Williamson added 12 to put three in double figures for Heights.
Hamilton Heights (1-2) has an all-county matchup on Saturday when it visits Guerin Catholic (1-2).
Girls Basketball: Carmel girls fall on the road in tough battle at Warren Central
The Carmel girls basketball team is that close to getting its first win of the season. A rough first quarter put the Greyhounds in a hole that they couldn’t quite dig themselves out of on Friday night, dropping their ninth in a row, 79-64 at Warren Central.
Warren Central got off to a hot start, leading Carmel 33-12 after one quarter. That made it an uphill climb for the remaining three quarters.
The visiting Greyhounds were able to outscore the Warriors in the final three periods 52-46, but that still wouldn’t be enough of a comeback.
The bright side for Carmel is that it keeps getting a very balanced effort offensively. The Greyhounds were able to get four into double figures.
Izzy Shepherd led the ‘Hounds with 13, Mallory Bourquein had 12, Jamie Elliott 11 and Hannah Lach (10) rounded out the four in double digits. Mackenzie Woods also added seven.
Carmel (0-9) continues to play one of the toughest schedules in the state on Tuesday, as it goes on the road to neighboring Westfield (5-2).
