Knapp named Husky Hero for extraordinary impact on students & families

Hamilton Heights Elementary School recognizes fourth-grade teacher Lauren Knapp as the newest Husky Hero.

Knapp was nominated by students and families who shared how deeply she has shaped their school experience through her compassion, responsiveness, and unwavering commitment to her students.

One student, Matthew Duprey, wrote simply and powerfully: “She always listens to me when I need to talk to her. She is also very kind.”

That sentiment was echoed in a detailed nomination from Sara Pitcher and her daughter, Kate, who described Knapp’s extraordinary care and intentionality. They highlighted the inclusive end-of-year video she created, the heartfelt letters she sent to students before their first day of middle school, and the personal notes she wrote to each child at the end of fourth grade.

“The time and care poured into each student was remarkable,” they said. “She advocates for her students, helps them problem-solve, and teaches them to think for themselves. We felt so blessed to have her for our daughter’s teacher.”

Knapp shared that being selected as a Husky Hero is “a tremendous honor,” especially knowing she works alongside so many deserving colleagues. What makes the recognition most meaningful, she said, is that it came directly from the students and families she serves.

“Teaching is about so much more than academics,” she said. “To know that the relationships I’ve built have made an impact is incredibly special to me.”

Relationships are at the heart of Knapp’s work. She described them as one of her greatest motivators, noting that she wants every student to feel loved, supported, and believed in.

“Knowing I can make even a small difference in a child’s life is incredibly powerful,” she said. Whether she is helping a student work through a challenge, celebrating a success, or simply being someone they can talk to, those moments fuel her commitment to show up and give her best every day.

Looking ahead, Knapp said that this recognition inspires her to continue growing as an educator and to keep creating a classroom environment where students feel included, challenged, and capable.

“I want to carry this recognition with me as encouragement to keep doing the little things that can make a big difference in a child’s life,” Knapp said.
