Indoor track season under way

The high school track and field season is under way in Indiana, starting with a few weeks of indoor meets that lead up to the annual Hoosier State Relays.
The Relays take place March 28 at Indiana University, with both a large school and small school division for both boys and girls. The top 24 athletes from across the state in running events, long jump and shot put, plus the top 18 in the high jump and pole vault, qualify for the Relays.
Hamilton County athletes are already off to a good start in the indoor season. Hamilton Southeastern hosted the Blue & White Relays Saturday at Anderson University. In the boys meet, the Royals’ Gage Pratt won the 60 dash, with Manraj Grewal finishing first in the high jump and Stephen Sydnor taking first in the long jump. Southeastern also won the 4×200 relay.
Fishers was also at the meet, and had four first-place results. Will Clark paced the 3200 run, Wyatt Puff won the shot put, and the Tigers were first in the 4×400 and distance medley relays.
In the girls meet, the Royals swept the 4×200, 4×400 and distance medley relays, with Fishers taking the 4×800 relay. Alison Casey won the pole vault and Ella Scally took first in the long jump.

Carmel’s boys team traveled to the University of Indianapolis on Saturday to compete in the Lawrence Central Open Events Championship
The Greyhounds won three events. Colton Parker was first in the 200 dash, Owen Schafer won the 400 dash and Logan Sandlin ran away with pole vault.

Indiana Wesleyan University hosted two qualifiers over the weekend.
Westfield was the sole county team to compete in Friday’s Qualifier #1. The Shamrocks boys got runner-up finishes from their 4×400 and 4×800 relays, while Sydney Black placed second in the girls long jump.
Noblesville and Hamilton Heights joined Westfield for Saturday’s Qualifier #2. In the boys meet, the Millers won three events: Andrew Herman was first in the high jump, Shomari Rogers-Walton won the long jump and Noblesville triumphed in the 4×400 relay. Westfield was first in the distance medley relay, and the Huskies’ Bayden Lutz tied for second in the pole vault.
Carmel also participated in the girls meet, along with the other three teams. The Greyhounds won the distance medley relay. Noblesville placed first in the 4×800 relay and Heights’ Maria Mitchell won the 3200 run.

Sheridan’s Rebecca Merritt won the shot put in the 2020 WL Individuals, which took place Friday at Purdue University.
Merritt, a state qualifier in the shot put last spring, won the event with a distance of 42-8.75.

Westfield competed in the Sparkplug HSR Qualifier last Tuesday at the University of Indianapolis. Carmel also had its pole vaulters compete there.
In the boys meet, the Shamrocks won the 4×800 and distance medley relays, with the Greyhounds’ Logan Sandlin dominating the pole vault, as he won with a leap of 15 feet, 3 inches, over four feet ahead of second place.
In the girls meet, Westfield also won the 4×800 and distance medley relays, while Sydney Black triumphed in the long jump. Two Carmel pole vaulters, Jenna Springirth and Tristan Barr, tied for first.
