When Carol, a resident at Independence Village of Carmel, first shared her wish to see her family in Minnesota one more time, the team at the senior living community made it happen through the their Dream Big initiative which helps bring residents’ dreams to life.
Carol recently flew to Minnesota for a four-day visit that brought her closer to the people and places that matter most to her.

Joined by Independence Village of Carmel team members, Carol’s journey began early in the morning on June 7. At the airport, she was met with a few surprises: an upgraded airplane seat and a warm welcome from the flight crew.
Once in Minnesota, Carol’s first stop was her daughter Shelly’s home, where she reunited with her great-grandson, Carter. They visited her husband’s gravesite. It was an important, peaceful, and emotional moment for Carol, one she had hoped for but wasn’t sure would happen. She had always wanted to visit one last time.
The next day was her great-granddaughter Leslie’s high school graduation open house. There, Carol reconnected with both of her sons, including the youngest, who surprised her by attending. She also met her cousin, who was the flower girl at her wedding, along with old friends, great-grandchildren, and many other loved ones she hadn’t seen in years. It was a joyful celebration for Carol, who had watched all the other granddaughters graduate from high school and didn’t want to miss Leslie’s milestone.

Her final stop was crossing off the last item on her trip list: visiting the Mall of America. She explored the shops and was amazed at how much the mall had changed. She even bought a new pair of shoes.
Carol has returned to Independence Village of Carmel, grateful for the wonderful moments she experienced during her trip to Minnesota. She appreciates not only the experience but also the cherished time with her family and the team who made this dream trip possible.
