On Wednesday, the Hamilton Southeastern Schools Board of Trustees unanimously voted to approve a contract appointing Patrick Mapes as the district’s next superintendent, effective immediately.

Mapes

Mapes brings over 35 years of experience in teaching and school administration in Indiana, having worked in large, medium, and small K-12 organizations. He most recently served as superintendent of Perry Township Schools, playing an instrumental role in strengthening that district over the course of seven years at the helm.

Prior to leading Perry Township Schools, Mapes was chairman of the Indiana Education Employment Relations Board and spent nearly 15 years serving in various capacities, including superintendent, within Delaware Community Schools in Muncie, Ind. He was also the assistant superintendent of public instruction for the Indiana Department of Education for three years and was selected to join the U.S. Department of Education as the regional advisory chairperson on education issues.

While he leads HSE, Mapes will also continue to serve the state as an appointee to the Indiana State Board of Education, which oversees K-12 education policymaking in Indiana.

HSE Schools will also be gaining the support of the entire Mapes family, including Mapes’ wife Jacinda and their children. The family plans to relocate from their current house on the south side of Indianapolis to a home in the HSE community.

“I am honored by the opportunity to lead Hamilton Southeastern Schools,” Mapes said. “I plan to hit the ground running by building on the strong foundation set by the district’s leadership and by connecting with HSE’s staff, students and neighbors. My family and I are looking forward to joining this amazing community.”

As one of his first actions as superintendent, Mapes plans to promote current interim superintendent Dr. Matt Kegley to deputy superintendent. Since September, Dr. Kegley has led the district with a steady hand through a time of transition. With more than 17 years of experience within HSE, Dr. Kegley is an extremely valuable member of HSE’s leadership team and larger community.

“The HSE school board and the entire district are grateful for Dr. Kegley’s leadership over the last several months,” Board President Dr. Juanita Albright said. “We are committed to continuing to uplift and support him in his new role as deputy superintendent.”

Kegley

“As always, I’m honored to be able to serve HSE Schools,” Dr. Kegley said. “The future is bright for our district, and I’m looking forward to working closely with Mr. Mapes to make HSE the best it can be.”

The appointment of Mapes and promotion of Dr. Kegley will provide HSE with a solid leadership cabinet to maintain and expand the district’s legacy of education excellence. The district’s mission to ensure every student and staff member has the resources, intellect, and skills to achieve their goals for higher education, careers, and life, remains unwavering.
