Jennifer Sexton, Hamilton Heights Middle School Business teacher, was presented with the 2018 Middle School Business Teacher of the Year Award at the Indiana Business Education Association Conference last week.

Sexton said she was surprised and humbled to be this year’s recipient. She has been teaching Preparing for College & Careers, Computer Applications, Business 6, Business 7/8, Digital Citizenship, and Keyboarding at the Middle School since 2016. Prior to this role, she worked in the Business Department at Hamilton Heights High School for three years.

A graduate of Taylor University’s transition to teaching, teaching is her second career. She also holds a degree in Accounting from Indiana Wesleyan University and is currently working on her master’s degree at Ball State University. Sexton is the Advisor for the Hamilton Heights Middle School Business Professionals of America (BPA) which was recognized as largest chapter in the nation last year. Now in its fourth year, under Sexton’s leadership, the program has grown to include over 100 students. Last year, the club did so well at the state level competition that Sexton took 25 qualifiers to the National Conference in Dallas, Texas, where 22 became among the Top 10 in the nation to compete in their respective areas.

“We are extremely proud of Jenny,” said Heights Superintendent Dr. Derek Arrowood. “Jenny has earned this recognition through her hard work within the business education curriculum and as the BPA advisor at the middle school. She is an excellent example of the caliber of educator making a difference every single day at Heights.”

Sexton is married to Randy, her high school sweetheart of 23 years. They have two children, Tanner (freshman at Ivy Tech) and Evan (sophomore at Hamilton Heights High School). In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends outdoors whether it is on the water, in the snow or riding ATVs.
