The Hamilton Heights girls basketball team dropped a home game to Bishop Chatard on Wednesday, 63-55.
It was all Huskies in the first quarter, as they led 11-3 by the end of the period. Jillian Osswald and Bayleigh Runner both made a 3-pointer during the quarter.
But the Trojans began to take over in the second period, pouring in 23 points. That allowed them to take a 26-24 lead by halftime. Heights was able to stay close, with MyKayla Moran scoring six points in the quarter and Payton Dissett adding five.
Chatard rolled through the third quarter to take 51-35 lead going into the fourth. The Huskies began to battle back, getting the lead under 10 points late when Runner hit another 3. With under a minute left, Runner converted a traditional three-point play and Osswald made a basket to cut the Trojans’ lead to 61-55. But Chatard finished the game with two free throws.
“We got out-toughed,” said Heights coach Keegan Cherry. “They get their second chance opportunities. Offensive rebounding for them was a big factor. They shot 21 of 23 from the foul line for the evening. We have a hard time staying in front of people. And that’s on me. We got to do a better job of guarding. We got to do a better job of staying in front of people and guarding without fouling.”
Runner led the scoring with 18 points, followed by Osswald with 15 and Moran with 11. Moran came close to a double-double, collecting nine rebounds. Osswald handed out six assists and Runner dished out five assists, and both had five steals. Other players stepped up as well.
“I thought Kaylee Rhoton had some good minutes in the fourth quarter,” said Cherry. “A JV kid coming up and she was really good on the back of that press there in the fourth quarter and helped us create some turnovers and get some scores and make this a little bit closer than probably it really was.”
The Huskies are 5-6 for the season. They will be off for a week, then return to action next Saturday (Dec. 27) at the Haag Ford East Central Holiday Tournament.
