NOBLESVILLE – The Sheridan wrestling team won an all-county dual meet over Guerin Catholic 54-17 Tuesday at the Eagles Nest.

The Blackhawks won 10 of the 13 contested matches, which included four pins. Zach Bales (at 175), Pablo Mendez (at 138), Hayden Alexander (at 144) and Bailey Cravens (at 150) each got falls. Ryker Ream and Caleb Alexander were decision winners, and Sheridan picked up forfeits for their other wins.

“We have a lot of inexperience, but every match that we’re wrestling, we’re getting better,” said Blackhawks coach Steve Leonard. “I’m seeing a lot of improvement from the new kids. Things are starting to click a little bit and they’re starting to get hungry to win.”

Guerin Catholic was led by Peter Nguyen, the Golden Eagles senior who was a state qualifier last year. He won his 126-pound match by technical fall.

“He’s doing a great job leading the team,” said GC coach Dan Hubbard. “He really stepped it up last year. He saw that he was going to need to be the leader of the team going into this senior year. And he’s leading by example.”

Dominic Moringiello got a pin at 157, and JP Hoefflin was a forfeit winner at 113.

“Three of our wrestlers are brand-new wrestlers, so we’re still learning,” said Hubbard. “It’s a long season. “We’ll bounce back from it and work harder and get ready for the next one.”
