Golf: County claims several Age Group State champions

The summer golf season is in full swing, and Hamilton County golfers continue to win trophies.

A total of 10 local golfers finished or tied for first place in their respective age groups at the Buffy & Alice Mayerstein Age Group Championships, which took place last Tuesday and Wednesday at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth. That number of winners included the three oldest age category in the boys division.

Recent Noblesville graduate Lance Decker won the Boys 18 championship, totaling a three under par 141 for the 36-hole event. That included six birdies during his first round of play, where he finished with a four-under 68. Decker drained four more birdies in the second round.

Fishers’ Mattingly Upchurch, an incoming senior at Hamilton Southeastern, was the Boys 17 champion, carding a seven under par 137. Upchurch also made six birdies in the first round while scoring a five under 67, then went under par again in the second round, with a two under 70. Upchurch eagled hole No. 15 in addition to making three birdies.

Carmel’s Alex Gardner, an incoming junior, won the Boys 16 title. He scored a four under 140, carding 71 for his first day and 69 for his second day. Gardner made six birdies in both rounds.

Another Carmel golfer, Luke Moore, dominated the Boys 12 division. He won with a score of seven under par 137, making seven birdies in both rounds.

Carmel’s Max Huffman (three birdies) and Fishers’ Gavin Davis (six birdies) tied for first place in the Boys 13 division, while Noblesville’s Lauren Turpin (three birdies) and Fishers’ Kendall Manion (six birdies) tied for first in the Girls 15 division.

Other county winners were Fishers’ Zach Kinzer in Boys 14 (four birdies), Addison Simpson of Westfield in Girls 11 and Carsen Fegan of Fishers in Boys 11 (six birdies).
