Golden Eagles sail past Danville

Guerin Catholic opened play in Sectional 26 at Crawfordsville Thursday with a 7-0 first-round victory over Danville.

The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the first inning. Ben Canada doubled in Nolan Ratcliff for the first run, then was brought home by Ian Taylor’s RBI groundout. Karson Smith later scored on an error.

Guerin Catholic put up two more runs in the third inning. Taylor scored on an error and Smith was sent home by a pitcher’s balk.

Liam Zorger scored in the fourth inning after another pitcher’s balk, giving the Golden Eagles a 6-0 lead. Jackson Baker added a sixth-inning run, scoring on a wild pitch.

Ratcliff finished with two of Guerin Catholic’s four hits. Grant Beard hit a single, along with Canada’s early double.

Three GC pitchers combined to allow the Warriors only one hit. Tate Troxell pitched four innings and struck out 10. Harrison Haq threw two innings, in relief, striking out three. Luke Gremelspacher was the seventh-inning closer, tossing three strikeouts.

Guerin Catholic is 22-3-1 and plays Frankfort Monday in the second semifinal. The first semifinal starts at 11 a.m., between Lebanon and Brebeuf Jesuit. The semifinal winners advance to the 6:30 p.m. championship game.
