The Carmel boys lacrosse team beat county rival Hamilton Southeastern 15-11 on Wednesday at Brownsburg to advance to the IHSLA Class 2A state championship game.
The Greyhounds had to make a comeback to win, as the Royals led 5-4 after one quarter. Ben Speckman and Henry Wans both scored two goals for Southeastern, with Sam Brandenburg adding another goal. E.B. Warren had two goals for Carmel, with Jack Stitle and Ike Stitle each scoring one.
The Hounds scored three goals in a row during the second quarter to lead 7-4. Warren put in his third goal, then Max McCord scored back-to-back goals. The Royals got two quick goals with under three minutes left, tying the score at 7-7 by halftime. Kyle Jenkins and Brandenburg scored HSE’s goals.
Wans threw in a quick goal for the Royals to start the third quarter, but Carmel’s Cohen Odle tied the game just as quickly. After a few defensive minutes, the Greyhounds poured in three more goals to lead 11-8 by the end of the period. Luke Shrift, Lincoln O’Leary and Warren all scored.
Carmel stayed comfortably ahead during the fourth quarter. Ike Stitle scored twice, then Luke Shrift gave Carmel a 14-9 lead with 5:18 left. Brandenburg added two Southeastern goals and Speckman scored one. Warren finished the game with his fifth goal, completing the scoring with 3:18 to play.
The Greyhounds will play Culver Academies on Saturday at Brownsburg. for the 2A state championship.
Golden Eagles advance to 1A final
The Guerin Catholic boys lacrosse team reached the Class 1A state championship game by beating Heritage Christian 15-13 on Tuesday at Brownsburg.
The Golden Eagles led 5-4 after the first quarter, then blanked Heritage 4-0 in the second period for a 9-4 halftime lead. Guerin Catholic held a 14-8 lead after three periods, then held off Heritage in the fourth quarter.
Gavin Soucie led GC with six goals and two assists. Vinny Elliott added five goals. Mason Walosin scored two goals and dished out two assists. Chris Giedd had one goal and three assists, J.B. Ford totaled one goal and two assists and Stephen Abdalla handed out one assist.
Guerin Catholic plays Evansville Memorial on Saturday for the 1A state title, also at Brownsburg.
