The Guerin Catholic girls lacrosse team came back in the fourth quarter to beat Carmel 9-8 in the semifinals of the INGLA Class 2A playoffs Saturday, May 23 at Zionsville.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one quarter. Lucy Esposito scored the first goal, then the Greyhounds’ Jackie Mabry tied the game. Natalie Laughon quickly scored, then Claire Flannagan put in two goals.
Caroline Ford scored in the second quarter to give GC a 5-1 lead. Ellie Espey and Mabry both added goals, but Flannagan’s third goal of the game gave the Golden Eagles a 6-3 halftime lead.
Carmel rolled through the third quarter, shutting out Guerin Catholic while scoring four goals to take a 7-6 lead. Julianna Mancini and Jackie Mabry brought the Hounds within 6-5, then Gia Ferrettie tied the game at the 9:03 mark. Ferrettie then scored with 1:37 left in the period to give Carmel the one-goal advantage.
Flannagan tied the game early in the fourth quarter, then Esposito put in the go-ahead goal with 7:25 left. Flannagan added her fifth goal at the 4:13 mark. Mabry put in her fourth goal of the game with under two minutes to go, but Guerin Catholic held on for the win.
The Golden Eagles are 16-4 and play Bishop Chatard this Saturday, May 30 at Zionsville for the 2A state championships. Carmel finished its season 10-9.
