Guerin Catholic was dealt a tough loss at the Eagles Nest on Tuesday, as the Class 3A No. 5 Golden Eagles fell to visiting New Palestine 63-61 on a last-second basket.
The Dragons, who are receiving votes in the Class 4A poll, led 23-16 after one quarter. Guerin Catholic came back to tie the game at 33-33 by halftime. New Palestine made another run in the third quarter, leading 56-47 by the end of the period. The Golden Eagles came back to tie the game at 61-61, but Ben Slagley grabbed a rebound and scored at the buzzer to give New Pal the win.
Guerin Catholic had four players reach double-figure scoring. Jack Cherry had 16 points and also handed out four assists. Robert Sorensen scored 15 points; he passed the 1,000-point career mark during the game. Sorensen also drained five 3-pointers.
Bryson Cardinal reached double-double status with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Andy Caron scored 10 points and handed out six assists.
The Golden Eagles 15-7 and host Indianapolis Washington on Thursday.
