Guerin Catholic had a tough assignment on Friday, as the Golden Eagles hosted Class 4A No. 1 Roncalli in a Circle City Conference game at the Eagles Nest.
The Royals jumped out to an early lead and eventually won the game 45-21. Guerin Catholic fought to the end, however, scoring three touchdowns on big plays.
The Golden Eagles got on the board in the second quarter with a 46-yard rushing touchdown by Justin Zdobylak. Guerin then got two long passing touchdowns in the second half: Alex Gibbs took an 80-yard throw from Ryan Zimmerman to the end zone in the third quarter, and Will Fremion finished the game by collecting a 73-yard touchdown pass from Zimmerman late in the fourth.
Zimmerman was 5-of-8 through the air, totaling 173 yards. Zdobylak led the rushing with 111 yards.
“I think we were better tonight. I thought we gave better effort, but I thought the effort and the execution was inconsistent at best,” said GC coach Tom Dilley. “But it’s improvement, and so we’re just going to come in tomorrow and see if we can get better tomorrow, do the same thing next week.”
Guerin Catholic is 0-2 in CCC play and 1-4 overall. The Golden Eagles finish up conference action next Friday when they host Bishop Chatard.
