Girls swimming: Carmel sends 24 to finals; Fishers, HSE also have many qualifiers

The Carmel girls swim team is in good position to extend its record state championship streak after its performance in the state preliminaries Friday at the IU Natatorium.
The Greyhounds qualified 24 of 27 swims into today’s state finals. Sixteen of Carmel’s swims will compete in the championship heat, including all three relays, with the other eight going to the consolation heat.
A big event for the ‘Hounds was the 200 freestyle, where all three of their swims made the championship. Kelly Pash is the top seed after her prelim time of 1:45.65, while Ashlyn Underhill and Kendra Bowen qualified sixth and seventh respectively. Pash is also the top seed in the 100 free, she swam that event in 48.87 on Friday.
Trude Rothrock’s Friday time of 53.62 made her the top seed in the butterfly, with Meredith Berglund placing sixth to make the championship heat. Carmel also got the top seed in the 400 free relay, swimming that event in 3:25.04.
Other championship qualifiers for the Greyhounds are: Rothrock and Katie Dougherty in the individual medley, Dougherty and Kendra Bowen in the 500 free, Taylor Conley and Colleen Duffy in the backstroke and Grace Estabrook in the breaststroke.
Carmel’s consolation qualifiers are Rachel Young in the IM, Alyssa Conley, Grace Pangburn and Duffy in the 50 free, Underhill and Young in the 100 free, Hannah White in the 500 free and Sarah Myung in the backstroke.
Fishers sent 14 swims on to the finals, including six into the championship heat. Amilia Nusbaum made the fast heat in the 50 and 100 freestyles, with Samantha Hietpas and Abigail Jahns both reaching the championship in the 500 free. The Tigers also qualified their medley and 400 free relays on to the championship heat.
Consolation qualifiers for Fishers are Jahns and Hannah Pratt in the 200 free, Corinne Yorkman in the IM, Kara Robeson in the butterfly, Pratt in the 100 free, Morgan Booth in the 500 free, Yorkman in the backstroke and Miya Wai in the breaststroke.
Hamilton Southeastern has 10 swims advancing to the finals, five each in the championship and consolation heats. Hannah Pugh made the fast heat of the 50 free, Abby Harter reached the championship of the backstroke, and the Royals qualified all three of their relays into the fast heat as well.
HSE’s consolation qualifiers are Harter and Pugh in the IM, Pugh in the butterfly, and Molly Pedersen in the 100 free and backstroke.
Westfield’s Erin Verbrugge made the championship heat in two events, the IM and the backstroke. The Shamrocks’ medley relay also qualified for the consolation heat.
Noblesville freshman Sammy Huff qualified for the championship heat of the breaststroke.
Hamilton Heights’ Rachel Sanqunetti finished 28th in the backstroke.
Championship Saturday begins with the diving prelims and semi-finals at 9 a.m., with the swimming and diving finals beginning at 1 p.m.

Positions 1-8 qualify for the championship heat, positions 9-16 qualify for the consolation heat, positions 17-18 are alternates.
