Girls basketball: University wins division opener

University started slowly Thursday night, but pulled away in the second half to defeat Anderson Prep 73-31, opening Pioneer Conference North division play with a victory.
The Trailblazers (6-2, 1-0 PAAC North) needed time to get going Thursday, leading just 16-6 at the quarter break and 30-14 at halftime against an Anderson Prep team that entered the game just with a 3-6 record. The Trailblazers’ leading scorer, Lindsey Syrek, had just four points at the break, as University was led by eight points from Lucy Snyder and six from Lily Snyder.
Syrek, and the rest of the University offense, finally got rolling in the third quarter, though, coming out of the gates quickly to remove all doubt from the outcome — the Trailblazers led 55-22 after three quarters, then added to their lead in the fourth for the 73-31 margin. Syrek finished with 22 points, 18 of which came after halftime, and 13 rebounds, while Lucy Snyder (14), Natalie Nickless (13) and Haley Tomlinson (12) all finished in double figures as well. Eight Trailblazers scored, with Elise Nachlis adding a bucket in the first quarter and Jaigh Sanders and Ana Turner each scoring in the fourth.
University returns to action Tuesday night, when it hosts International.
