Former Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard, known for his leadership in building a vibrant, diverse, and connected community, has endorsed Jon Shapiro and Kristina Wheeler for the at-large seats on the Carmel Clay School Board in the Nov. 5 general election.
Recognizing the critical role strong public schools play in Carmel’s continued success, Brainard said he believes Shapiro and Wheeler are the candidates best equipped to maintain the high standards and quality of education that have made Carmel thrive.
“I am supporting Jon Shapiro and Kristina Wheeler in the upcoming Carmel School Board elections, and I want to share with you why that decision made sense,” Brainard said. “First, our schools are the most important economic development partners ensuring Carmel’s success in preserving our high quality of life and providing the foundations that keep our property values high. Second, these candidates are focused on academic and character-building support that ensures our graduates are ready to excel in higher education, help build a strong workforce, and if they choose to enlist in our country’s military services. We have an excellent school system, and these candidates will in my opinion preserve the correct focus for our youth.”
Support CCS said that it is deeply honored that, in his capacity as a private citizen with a unique experience and perspective on the city, Brainard has chosen to publicly support Shapiro and Wheeler.
“Mr. Brainard has been instrumental in shaping the diverse and welcoming community that our public schools now serve,” Support CCS Chair Jennifer Cashin said. “It means a great deal to us that he recognizes Jon Shapiro and Kristina Wheeler as the candidates best prepared to keep our schools strong, successful, and worthy of the trust our community places in them.”

I’m confused; I thought Brainard was a Republican but the county Republican Party was working for the other two opponents.
