The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office has announced open enrollment for the Fall Citizens Academy. This session will run from Sept. 9 through Nov. 18, with graduation scheduled for Dec. 2.
Each class is designed to create a positive partnership with the local communities. The purpose of the Citizens Academy is to foster communication between citizens and law enforcement officers through education and interaction. The Academy will create a core of well-informed citizens who possess better insight into police practices and services. Everyone benefits from this greater understanding of the roles and functions of the local Sheriff’s Office. Strong community relationships will abound with this transparent training.
The curriculum is dynamic and highly interactive. Topics will include constitutional law, ethics, investigations, firearms, use of force, drug/alcohol enforcement, emergency vehicle operations, K-9, bicycle patrol and much more. The Academy will encourage the community to interact with deputies and other law enforcement professionals who work in various divisions in Hamilton County. The classes will be offered weekly on Thursdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, 18100 Cumberland Road, Noblesville.
This will be an opportunity for the community to see how the Sheriff’s Office operates and will provide an opportunity for citizens to participate in police style training. The Academy is not designed to give citizens police powers or authority.
The goals of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Citizens Academy are to encourage an increased understanding of law enforcement operations and procedures, bridge the gap between the community and the Sheriff’s Office by building trust and cooperation, as well as provide a forum for citizen-law enforcement dialogue.
The Citizens Academy welcomes all residents of Hamilton County who are 18 years of age or older. Priority will be given to individuals who are in the service jurisdiction of the county sheriff. A criminal background check will be conducted on all individuals who wish to participate. Applicants with a misdemeanor conviction within one year of applying or with a prior felony conviction will be disqualified. Final selection of any applicant will be at the discretion of the Sheriff.
