In an inspiring display of civic engagement, a group of 25 high school students from six different Hamilton County schools recently descended upon the Indiana Statehouse to advocate for increased cigarette taxes and stricter regulations on vaping.

The students, accompanied by educators and community leaders, embarked on this impactful journey to address the pressing issue of youth smoking and vaping within their communities.

Led by Breathe Easy Hamilton County, the students had the unique opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue with Representative Victoria Garcia Wilburn (D-Fishers), who has been a stalwart advocate for public health in the state. The visit included an informative tour of the Statehouse, providing students with a firsthand look at the legislative process, and culminated in an insightful session where they observed lawmakers deliberating on matters affecting the well-being of citizens.

The primary focus of the students’ advocacy was to highlight the importance of implementing higher cigarette taxes and more stringent regulations on vaping products. Their motivation stems from a genuine concern for the health and well-being of their peers and the broader community. Youth smoking and vaping pose serious health risks and contribute to a range of long-term health issues.

VOICE, Breathe Easy Hamilton County’s youth-led initiative, believes that involving young voices in the legislative process is crucial for fostering a sense of responsibility and ownership over public health issues. By bringing together students from diverse backgrounds and schools, the organization aims to amplify the collective impact of youth advocacy and encourage a collaborative approach to address these pressing concerns.

“We are immensely proud of our students for taking the initiative to advocate for the health of their communities,” Youth Coordinator Erica Strahm said. “Their engagement with Representative Garcia and their presence in the Statehouse signify the power of youth voices in influencing positive change.”

The visit to the Statehouse not only provided the students with a platform to express their concerns but also served as a valuable educational experience that will undoubtedly shape their understanding of the democratic process.

“Going to the statehouse to talk to the representatives was an amazing experience!” said Yasemin, a junior at Hamilton Southeastern High School. “I was most impacted by the way Rep Wilburn really listed to us, and made us feel like we were heard; I feel we have made an ally in trying to protect and help people stay tobacco and nicotine free, and life a healthier lifestyle.”

“Getting to go to the Statehouse for a third time was cool,” said Drew, a junior at Westfield High School. “I believe VOICE is making a huge difference in Indiana and it has given me a platform to serve and help my community.”

As these young advocates return to their schools, they carry with them the knowledge that their voices matter and that they can actively contribute to building healthier communities. Breathe Easy Hamilton County remains committed to supporting youth-led initiatives and will continue to empower the next generation of civic leaders.
