June 17, 1945 – March 28, 2022
Claude Vinton Burtron, Jr., 76, Sheridan, passed away on Monday morning, March 28, 2022. Born on June 17, 1945, in Clinton County, Ind., he was the son of the late Claude Vinton Burtron, Sr. and Gladys A. (Honeas) Burtron.
After graduating from Sheridan High School with the Class of 1963, Claude continued forward with his education, attending both Indiana University in Bloomington and Pentecostal Bible Institute in Tupelo, Miss.
He was a member of The Bible Church of Sheridan, where he faithfully served as an Honorary Trustee of the Church. He was also an active member of Hinkle Masonic Lodge F&AM #310.
Claude worked for Delco Remy in Anderson, Ind., retiring in 2005 after 40 years of dedicated service to the company. Retirement afforded Claude more time to devote to his passions and to the things he treasured most in life – service to others and his family.
Service was a constant theme throughout his life. During his early working years, Claude was an orderly with Riverview Hospital in Noblesville and later worked at the Sheridan Healthcare Center where he became a QMA, advancing his service to the residents. As the years passed, it was soon time for his years of caring for patients to be turned inward toward his family. As his loving wife’s health started to decline, Claude faithfully saw to Libby’s needs – being her advocate, caregiver, and whatever else she needed for him to be at any given moment – a beautiful testament to the love they shared together.
After retiring from Delco Remy, Claude began serving his community as a substitute teacher within the Sheridan School System. Education was very important to both him and his wife Libby. Her work with kindergarteners encouraged Claude to take a leap of faith and try his hand at substitute teaching. He quickly fell in love with both teaching and the students he worked with, earning him the distinct pleasure of becoming one of the favorite substitute teachers (by both the students and the teachers alike) within the school system.
Claude also realized the importance of taking some time for yourself to recharge mentally. For Claude, that meant puttering around his property, gardening and taking great pains to keep his few acres of peace and quiet perfectly manicured and preserved. His hard work attracted the birds, which Claude very much enjoyed watching. Claude was also fastidious about his personal appearance; he was always well put-together, especially when it came to his shoes and cologne.
Claude loved traveling with Libby and enjoyed their trips to the Amish areas of Ohio. He was a loyal Sheridan Blackhawks fan and he paid attention to current sporting events.
Family was a very important part of Claude’s life. He was a loving husband and father, but his grandchildren were his pride and joy.
Claude is survived by his two sons, Anthony W. “Tony” Burtron (Beth) of Westfield, and Jason T. “Todd” Burtron (Tami) of Sheridan; daughter, Alicia A. Amsbury (Danan) of Sheridan; seven grandchildren, Wade Burtron (Alison), Zane Burtron (Francesca), Emme Burtron, Annaka Burtron-Zachery (Nick), Weston Burtron, Isaiah Amsbury, and Noah Amsbury; three great-grandchildren, Kinley Burtron, Brayden Burtron, and Luca Burtron; two brothers, Carl E. Burtron (Elaine) and Rick L. Burtron (Jean Ann); seven sisters, Phyllis A Litteral, Carolyn Biddle, Charlene Haughy, Isabelle B. Cummins (Wesley), Sandra K. Spencer, Janet Wallace (Randy) and Tina Burtron (Ken); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Kathy Jo Burtron and Mary Lou Pickett; brothers, Robert J. Burtron and Thomas C. Burtron; and by the love of his life, Elizabeth Irene “Libby” Burtron on March 24, 2020. She and Claude were married on June 4, 1965.
Masonic Services will be held at 2 p.m., with the Funeral Service immediately following, on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at Kercheval Funeral Home, 306 E. 10th St., Sheridan. Visitation will be held from noon until the time of service. Burial will follow at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan. Claude’s son, Todd Burtron, will be officiating.
